I take great care to give my monsters sympathetic characteristics. I’d explored “Misfortune” in tons of different ways in my sketchbook before arriving at a handful of tighter thumbnails. I intended the drama of this piece to come, not from this creature’s innate alien or demonic qualities, but rather from the misfortune befalling him. I feel a strong kinship with the imagery of struggling monsters. As someone who has battled psychosis and body dysmorphia, it is cathartic for me to restage that struggle in a cosmic setting.
